Adding a Headphone Jack to My Sony A6500

Zoom H1

Rode VideoMicro

Sony A6500

For those who shoot video in 4K with the Sony A6000 and A7 series cameras and wish that there is a headphone jack in the camera, I have a few workarounds for you.

Option 1: you will need the following items:

Micro HDMI to VGA Adapter

Portable Headphone Amp

Instruction can be found here.

Option 2: or you can get a camera monitor such as the one featured in the Youtube video below which will give you a headphone jack.
$200 4K Capable 7″ Camera Monitor

However, both of these options have one major flaw—it will disable the face detection feature which is essential to keep my subject’s face in focus during the shoot.

My Only Option

Connect an external microphone to a digital audio recorder such as the Zoom H1

and use a Y-splitter such as
this one

and a Stereo Audio Cable with 1/8″ TRS Connectors such as
this one

Feed the audio from the digital audio recorder to the camera’s audio input and you can plug in your headphone at the Y-splitter as well. This seems to be the only way to preserve the face detection feature and be able to monitor the audio during filming in 4K.
